Hi I'm Bev - I am a fully qualified and highly experienced teacher of English who lives near Penrith in Cumbria in the UK. I have over 25 years’ experience teaching English in a variety of educational settings including further and adult education colleges and secondary schools. Furthermore, I have over 12 years’ experience working as an examiner marking GCSE and A Level English papers for a major UK exam board.

 

For three years I taught English Literature, Theatre Studies and Drama at a Ministry of Education junior college (sixth form in the UK) in Singapore. On my return, I became an examiner for the

Cambridge International AS and A Level Literature in English (9695). I was also commissioned to write online resources to support the Cambridge University Press text book for this course.

 

Before becoming a teacher I worked as a journalist on magazines and newspapers. I have had numerous articles published in national magazines and newspapers. Although my career as a journalist was interesting and made good use of my skills – I switched to teaching because I wanted to help people develop their English skills.

 

I took English and Drama for my degree. I am passionate about drama and enjoy writing plays some of which have been professional produced and performed.

Because every child learns differently…

 

every child needs to be taught differently. With the best will in the world this is something a one-size-fits-all education system cannot deliver but I can - through my highly personalised tuition sessions.

 

Having taught in a variety of educational settings for the past 25 years and as a private tutor for the past 15 years - I speak from experience. I know what a huge difference good quality one-to-one tuition can have on a student’s learning. I know because I have helped so many of my tutees improve their grades in English whether they have been chasing those coveted top grades or simply aiming to pass. It’s an added bonus for my students that I am also a highly experienced examiner having marked both GCSE and AS/A Level exam papers in English Language and English Literature for over 10 years. This work gives me insights into what the exam boards are looking for and how my students can maximise their chances of achieving the grades they seek.

 

It is my firm belief that every student is capable of improving given the right support and encouragement. And, in my experience, it is largely a lack of confidence that impedes learning which is why, in my sessions, I focus on building self-confidence in my students as well as strengthening their skills in English. Whether it is improving on the basics of spelling, punctuation and grammar or learning how to craft a detailed analytical response to a text – I put each student’s individual needs at the centre of their learning experience.

 

 


Having taught in Singapore for 3 years at a Ministry of Education junior college, I also offer online tuition in H1 and H2 Literature in English, a Singapore-Cambridge GCE qualification. I later went on to become an examiner with Cambridge International Education and marked AS and A Level Literature in English exam papers from all over the world. My expertise in this qualification led to a commission from Cambridge University Press to write online resources to support the publication of the course book - Cambridge International AS and A Level Literature in English – which has been recently updated.

 

 

 

 

As part of my role as a further and adult lecturer, I taught the English unit of an Access to HE course. Later I was employed as a lead moderator for this unit by the Ascentis exam board - a key validating body for this qualification. I also created and delivered courses in creative writing, journalism for NOCN, (National Open College Network).
